2.3.3 Sustainable food choices on campus
UNISSULA Promotes Healthy, Affordable, and Sustainable Food Choices on Campus
Universitas Islam Sultan Agung (UNISSULA) is committed to supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2: Zero Hunger by promoting access to healthy, safe, affordable, and sustainable food choices across the university campus. UNISSULA recognizes that a sustainable food environment is an important part of student welfare, healthy lifestyles, and the development of a sustainable campus community.
Through its campus food services and sustainability initiatives, UNISSULA encourages the availability of nutritious and affordable meals for students, lecturers, staff, and visitors. Campus food facilities provide a variety of food and beverage options that enable members of the university community to select meals according to their nutritional needs, preferences, and financial circumstances.
The development of sustainable food choices at UNISSULA is also aligned with the university’s commitment to creating a healthy and environmentally responsible campus environment. Food service providers are encouraged to maintain food hygiene, use safe ingredients, reduce unnecessary packaging, and apply appropriate waste separation and management practices.
Healthy and Affordable Food Options for Students
UNISSULA considers affordability an important element of sustainable food access. Campus food services provide a range of meals and beverages at different price levels, allowing students to select food according to their individual needs and financial capacity.
The availability of affordable food on campus contributes to student welfare by helping students maintain adequate nutrition while participating in academic activities.
The university also encourages food providers to pay attention to:
- food hygiene and safety;
- nutritional quality;
- reasonable and affordable pricing;
- appropriate food portions;
- variety of food choices; and
- responsible food handling.
These practices contribute to a campus food environment that supports both student well-being and the objectives of SDG 2.
Promoting Sustainable Food Practices
UNISSULA integrates sustainable food practices into its broader environmental management initiatives. Food providers and members of the university community are encouraged to reduce the environmental impact associated with food consumption.
The initiatives include:
- reducing unnecessary single-use packaging;
- encouraging reusable food and beverage containers;
- separating organic and inorganic waste;
- reducing food waste;
- promoting responsible food consumption; and
- improving awareness of sustainable food practices.
These practices are connected with UNISSULA’s broader commitment to developing a Sustainable and Green Campus, where environmental responsibility is integrated into everyday campus activities.
Supporting Local and Sustainable Food Resources
UNISSULA also recognizes the importance of local food resources in building a more resilient and sustainable food system.
The university encourages the use and promotion of locally available food products and ingredients where appropriate. Supporting local food resources can provide several benefits, including strengthening local economic activity, reducing dependence on long-distance food supply chains, and promoting the diversity of Indonesian food resources.
Through education, research, community engagement, and campus food services, UNISSULA provides opportunities to introduce local food products and sustainable food innovations to the university community.
Student Innovation for Healthy and Sustainable Food
UNISSULA’s commitment to sustainable food choices is also supported through student research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and community engagement.
Students are encouraged to develop innovative food products that utilize local resources, improve nutritional value, and provide practical solutions to contemporary food challenges.
Student innovations related to:
- nutritious food products;
- local food diversification;
- food processing;
- sustainable agriculture;
- food technology; and
- environmentally responsible food production
can contribute to the development of a more resilient food system.
These activities provide an opportunity for students to transform academic knowledge into practical solutions that support food security and sustainable consumption.
Food Safety and Responsible Consumption
Food safety is an important component of sustainable food choices at UNISSULA. The university promotes awareness among food providers and the campus community regarding hygienic food preparation, safe food handling, and responsible consumption.
The university also encourages students to make informed food choices by considering nutritional value, food safety, affordability, and environmental impact.
Through these efforts, food services on campus are positioned not only as facilities for providing meals, but also as part of the university’s broader effort to develop a healthy, responsible, and sustainable campus lifestyle.
Building a Sustainable Campus Food Culture
UNISSULA recognizes that sustainable food choices require participation from the entire university community. Therefore, the university continues to strengthen awareness among students, lecturers, staff, food providers, and other campus stakeholders.
Educational and awareness activities can include:
- campaigns on healthy eating;
- food safety education;
- sustainable consumption campaigns;
- food waste reduction campaigns;
- promotion of local food products; and
- student-led sustainability activities.
Through these activities, UNISSULA seeks to establish a campus culture in which healthy and sustainable food choices become an integral part of everyday life.
Continuous Improvement
UNISSULA continues to develop its campus food system to strengthen the availability and accessibility of healthy and sustainable food choices.
Future development priorities include:
- strengthening standards for campus food providers;
- increasing the availability of nutritious and affordable food;
- promoting local and environmentally responsible food products;
- improving food safety monitoring;
- expanding food waste reduction initiatives;
- developing data-based monitoring of campus food services; and
- increasing student participation in sustainable food innovation.
Through these initiatives, UNISSULA demonstrates its contribution to SDG 2: Zero Hunger by supporting access to healthy, affordable, safe, and sustainable food choices while promoting responsible consumption and a more resilient campus food system.
